I chose to create a portrait of Rick Rubin because his philosophy on art deeply resonates with me. While listening to his book and countless interviews, I was struck by his belief that true art is made for yourself—if you create for any other reason, it’s not really art. That idea challenged me because, like many artists, I crave validation. It’s a constant practice to tune out what I think others will appreciate and focus on making work that genuinely excites me.
Rick.

I also love the way Rick Rubin looks—there’s something about his presence, this mix of a hipster and a homeless sage, that visually embodies his unconventional approach to creativity. I tend to create portraits of people who have had a real impact on me, and his words have directly influenced how I approach my own work. This piece is a reminder to keep returning to what I love, rather than what I think will be loved by others.
